RNZI: Fiji’s Sayed-Khaiyum says no discussions had on forming political party

Fiji’s interim Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says there have been no discussions among current leaders about forming a political party.

He was responding to suggestions that the Fiji regime was considering forming a political party and running in the 2014 polls.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says such talk is a red herring put about by politicians who are feeling like fish out of water among a new generation of voters.

“Sayed-Khaiyum: We have not even talked about the issue. People seem to know more about what we are doing than we ourselves. Reporter: ’Politically are you interested? Are you a political animal?’ Sayed-Khaiyum: We have not discussed this matter at all.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says the crux of the issue is that the key political parties have as their basis an ethnic agenda and they have never contested elections by having to appeal to all citizens.
