Consultations must be inclusive: JPA mission

The constitution making process must be widely representative and have the support and confidence of the people of Fiji says the Joint Parliamentary Assembly’s (JPA) fact finding mission to Fiji.

The team has rounded their tour and says they will refrain from making recommendations for the constitution making process.

During its three-day visit, the delegation spoke to a wide range of people including government officials, politicians, former government members and the Constitutional Commission.

JPA co-president Musikari Kombo says they are not here to find any solution for Fiji’s political situation.

“We have been given the roadmap and we have asked questions – are you going to leave within this roadmap or not and we have been assured that they (govt) will live up to the steps they have undertaken so far. All we can do as a mission we will give our report back and hope that the people of Fiji themselves will also push and ensure that what they are being promised as part of the roadmap does take place.”


The mission will compile a report of their visit which will be debated at the ACP/EU joint parliamentary assembly’s meeting in Brussels in September.
