BREAKING NEWS: Deputy Solicitor General Banuve sacked by junta

Deputy Solicitor General Savenaca Banuve was sacked today by the military junta for refusing to defend cases pending against the interim administration.

Intelligentsiya sources confirm that Mr Banuve was given an ultimatum about handling cases brought by ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and two members of the Great Council of Chiefs.

We understand that Mr Banuve replied that his lawyers would not handle those cases as they already had a heavy load and that, secondly, it was their viewpoint that the current regime was illegal.

The cases Mr Banuve rejected now falls to senior legal officers and our sources tell us there may well be an exodus of lawyers who refuse to do it on the principle that the junta is illegal anyway.

An email sent to Mr Banuve’s official government address this afternoon was returned as undeliverable.

However, sources within several of the government’s legal divisions confirmed Mr Banuve’s sacking.

Thanks for the update! Great Work!

Also the soldiers are at it again - beating people up out in the open. This happened last night at Natabua Housing!

Soldiers & Police teamed up on foot patrol and beat up some youths around 9pm saying they were searching for "drugs".

Let's just hope we do not see another "Rabaka" case in the days to come.

Thank you Mr. Banuve for being principled and it is wonderful that there are many of us who will not bend our standards for those who have none. the Shameems sisters makes feel so sad for the wonderful mother they had who taught my son and I am always proud of her teaching because she helped me moulded my son to what he is now. I will never be ashame to talk about Mrs. Shameem's role in that - it amkes me wonder what happened to her children. It must be greed.

it is true about Ana...cos all her dirty linen and more of her incompontence is going to show....I heard from a friend that she is not looking forward in facing more seasoned highly experienced and qualified lawyers.....the joke is that she will be defering all her rulings to allow her time to ask her few shitty friends to help her .....we definately will not have proper access to justice with people like that idiot on the bench!!!

Why is the DPP sooo silent on the new anti corruption decree and body. Joe and the DPP is the constitutionally mandated prosecutorial body......one would expect them to challenge this new super nazi gestapo body...but ..the silent is deafening....well at least some people have balls and are not all mouth - good on you Save Banuve for standing up to your principles!!!!

To Anon @ 16.45: I disagree with you as no one, not ever hve ever said all was well, perfect & 'rosy posy' in the pre-bainimarama legal world..

To Anon at 16.45 on 11 May - like every trade & profession everywhere in the world, there were professional differences and people had their own groups of friends within the society.

What 5/12 has done is the equivalent of "separating the men from the boys"....

Those who are ruled by their conscience and their morals (forget the law)knew then that it was WRONG - and the Pakistanis be damned. There was no necessity!!

That being the case, to accept (or in Ana's case to kerekere) a position under this regime means that you CONDONE and SUPPORT what has happened.

Some of the lawyers support what the military has done and is doing and except for a couple of inisgs, most of them will not publicly state that they support the coup.
Otherwise, the senior lawyers like the Sahu Khans might lose their PR status and may not be able to travel.
