The Fiji Police Force has recorded a 21% decrease in crime for the first 2 weeks of this month.

However Spokesperson Ana Naisoro says theft and assault cases remain a concern.

Naisoro says the reduction was recorded in rape, attempted to rape, indecent assault and arson related offences.

She attributed the reduction to increased surveillance by police officers.

“We have changed our operations in terms of beefing up visibility in areas especially after analysing the crime trend. We’ve noted that most of it occurs during the weekend, like I said we have increased the visibility on the streets, and at the same time we ensure that we are seen – which I can say has attributed to the decrease in crime.”

Naisoro says while there was a 40% decrease on rape offences, the reports received indicates a worrying occurrence within the society.

She says in most cases the perpetrators are related to the victims.
