The move has union allies in Australia considering their next move while Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd condemns the latest round of intimidation of union officials:
Government condemns intimidation of Fiji trade unionists
Media release
5 November 2011
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has condemned the arrest of the National Secretary of the Fiji Trades Union Congress, Felix Anthony. Mr Anthony's detention follows the arrest on Saturday 29 October of the President of the Fiji Trades Union Congress, Daniel Urai. Neither man has been charged.
Mr Urai was previously arrested in August under Fiji's Public Emergency Regulations for meeting other trade unionists without a permit. Mr Anthony was also detained by the regime earlier this year.
"This is another example of what appears to be a concerted campaign by the Fiji authorities to target and intimidate trade unionists and other political opponents,” Mr Rudd said.
The Australian Government is watching developments closely and is calling on the Fiji interim Government to release Mr Urai and Mr Anthony from detention.
