A 43-year-old Chinese businessman has been acquitted by the Nadi Magistrates Court after initially being charged with failing to declare foreign currency.

The charge
Jinrong Nie was charged with one count of failing to declare foreign currency on his Immigration Card upon arrival at the Nadi International Airport on August 2.

The plea
Nie appeared before Magistrate Mohammed Ajmeer on Monday and pleaded guilty to the charge.

The case
It was revealed in court that an immigration officer had searched Nei’s luggage at Nadi International Airport and found the foreign currency equivalent to F$52,987.04.

The money was seized and the matter was reported to Police.

In his mitigation Nie told the court he was unaware that it was an offence not to declare foreign currency under the laws of Fiji.

Nie, of Macau, in China, also told court that he came for a holiday with his family to Fiji. Magistrate Mohammed Ajmeer fined Nie F$2000 for not declaring foreign currency and ordered Police to return his money.

Magistrate Ajmeer also asked Nie to declare foreign currency when he departs Fiji.

Nie is currently in Fiji with his family for holiday.
