Up to twenty million dollars worth of Yaqona from Vanuatu is being imported and consumed in Fiji every year.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, this money could just as easily be circulated within Fiji, using local Kava.
Deputy Secretary Uraia Waibuta says local farmers are just not planting enough.
_ It’s just shortage, the farmers in Fiji are not producing enough for the local consumption and also the price difference, this is an area of concern, local produced Kava is so expensive but Vanuatu Kava is cheap.”_
The Agriculture Ministry has now included yaqona in its re-prioritising program.
