Fiji Trades Union Congress condemns Fiji Labour Party practices
Posted at 20:24 on 02 September, 2012 UTC
The President of the Fiji Trades Union Congress has joined with others to condemn the Fiji Labour Party and its practices.
Daniel Urai says the party has lost its multi-racial base and has become a party run by Indo-Fijians for Indo-Fijians.
He says Mr Chaudhry and his son Rajendra are dominating the scene.
He also accused Mr Chaudhry of corruption and provided a transcript of the Labour Party conference during which the leader was asked about large sums of money raised in his name in India after the 2000 coup in Fiji.
Mr Chaudhry denied ever receiving the payments raised from the village of Haryana, despite Mr Urai saying he had proof in the form of Commonwealth Bank of Australia statements with figures in excess of two million Australian dollars.
Mr Urai says the Trades Union Congress is now considering forming a new party before the 2014 elections.
“That is one of the options available to us. We will have to go on a major consultation around the country of various trade unions and get their views and then see which direction we will go, so that the workers will still have a voice in Parliament.”
President of the Fiji Trades Union Congress, Daniel Urai.
