MOTIONS

Human Rights, Fiji—

Hon PHIL GOFF (Labour—Mt Roskill): I seek leave of the House to move without notice and without debate a motion concerning the beating and the torture of detainees in Fiji.

Mr SPEAKER: Is there any objection to that course of action being followed? There appears to be none.

Hon PHIL GOFF: I move, That this House condemn the beating and torture of detainees in Fiji evidenced in the recent video recording of the event, and call upon the interim Government of Fiji to publicly condemn the use of torture, to hold to account those responsible, and to uphold as standards of best practice the requirements of the United Nations’ convention against torture and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
