Health Ministry to increase number of nurses

08:49 Today (July 13, 2013)

About 200 nurses will be recruited annually in the public health sector over the next five years.

Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma says previously the intake was 90 nurses annually but this has been recently increased to 170 per year.

“In 2009 the number of nurses in Fiji was 1500 now we have 2200 nurses at the end of five years we will have 3200 nurses. So nurses are the important face of health care and they are out in the periphery and we need adequate number of nurses to be able to work.”

This is part of the Health Ministry’s overall goal of improving health care services.

Three diabetes hubs were opened around the country and a new health center in Lautoka yesterday.
