An inmate who escaped from the Suva Corrections Centre last year appealed his sentence in the High Court in Suva yesterday.

Ioane Benedito, who is charged with one count of escaping from lawful custody and damaging property, appeared before judge Justice Janaka Bandara.

Benedito is serving eight months for both counts.

He appealed his sentence on the grounds that two of his co-accused had their sentences suspended while another was given three months. Justice Bandara has given prosecutions two weeks to reply to Benedito’s submission. Benedito escaped from the Domanu dormitory at the Suva Corrections Centre on November 18 last year through a toilet window.

He was captured 10 days later at Komai Settlement in Nabua by Police officers from the Nabua Police Station.

Justice Bandara has adjourned the matter to July 31 for the prosecution to reply to the submission.
